Newcastle Contact Lenses Position

Newcastle Contact Lenses believe the increase in competition within optics over the past decade has been good for patients, bringing increased choice of products and services. This practice has thrived, not by cutting corners but by providing a high level of service, thorough eye examination and high quality products. Our Comprehensive Eye Examination, and the fact that we have continued to afford and invest in new technology, are the principal reasons why so many patients recommend our practice.

The NHS Examination

Unfortunately, the NHS Sight Test remains where it was in 1989, as has the scale of t!he fee paid to us for carrying it out. We think that you deserve a better eye examination than the NHS provides and we want to provide it for you. However, the NHS does not pay us to carry out a Comprehensive Eye Examination. The NHS currently pays us about �17 for the "sight test". However, it costs �36 for us to carry out our comprehensive examination with slit lamp, digital imaging and analysis of the retina. NHS patients therefore have a choice, they can either opt for the basic NHS "sight test" and accept its limited nature or they can pay the "extension fee" of �19 to give them the same service we provide private patients. Our preferred policy on NHS sight tests is

• Treat all patients in the same way irrespective of whether the NHS pays for part of their examination
• Make our fees and charges for the extended part of the examination transparent

Newcastle Contact Lenses Children's Eye Care

It is very rare that a child will require the extra tests included in the private eye examination. For this reason children under 16 will be booked for the basic NHS sight test. In the rare instance that the Comprehensive Eye Examination is required, the fee will only apply after parental consent has been gained to proceed with the extra tests
